Often times during our Vineyard and Winery tours, we experience awe and wonder- a perfectly harmonious glass of wine, savored with each little delicious sip or perhaps a peaceful moment ambling through the gnarled vines and marveling how they were planted over a century ago. Nestled in the northern slope of the Alpilles mountains, between Saint-Rémy de Provence and Eygalières, we have discovered an underground masterpiece the inspires pure reverence.
Chateau Romanin is one of Provence’s unique gems. Romanin is defined as, a child blessed by the gods, and when stepping into the winery’s wine cellar, you will feel blessed by the heavens too. The winery is situated on the ruins of a 13th century castle for the Knights Templar and the cellar has exemplified the ruins to their best advantage. Carved deep into the rock face, the space is a wonderfully atmospheric cave with soaring columns and curving arches that give it a cathedral like quality.
